Panthers Edge Devilettes for Gold!
The St. Thomas Panther Atom Girls LL Team showed no respect to their competition over the weekend, earning gold in their annual Panthers on The Prowl girls hockey Tournament.
The Panthers finished atop of their pool ahead of the Stoney Creek Sabres and Toronto Leaside, earning them an automatic bid into the Sunday afternoon Final against a strong London White Devilettes team. The teams met earlier in the tournament and London scored on a goal mouth scramble with 4 seconds left in the 2nd period to squeak out a 1-0 victory. In the final the Panthers came out on a mission and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Vanessa Johnston and Shelby Vanderkooy. From there, Goalie Rianne Neil made sure the Panthers were coming away with the Gold Medal. Neil frustrated London on most of their scoring attempts right down to the final buzzer where the Panthers won 2-1. With injuries and illness running through the Panthers line up the team had to step up their play. Defence-men Vanderkooy, Julia Conrad, Kayla Lentz, Aviva Fournie and Kaila Novak played a strong tournament on the blue line, while Forwards Alexa Congdon, Amy Conrad, Mackenzie Costa, Vanessa Johnston, Audrey Sheridan, Madison Thompson, Hannah McIntyre, Renee Lammiman and Heather Dennis played some of their best hockey of the season. The Panthers are back home again Friday when they host Woodstock at the St.Thomas Elgin- Memorial Centre at 6:30pm.
